Cook Quinoa for health

This relatively unknown seed Quinoa, pronounced as keen-wah, is slowly gaining more attention because of its healthy nutrients and benefits. Known as the Gold of the Incas, this super grain contains a lot of protein and nutrients, thus the nickname. It may be becoming quite commonly known now but it is still not easily available everywhere.

The Quinoa comes in a lot of different colors from red to black to the plain white but sadly even now, it is mostly available at health food stores. Although it has been considered and called a grain all this while, it is actually a seed. Regardless of what it is, what’s important is that it is a great addition to any diet as it contains essential amino acids and lysine. Quinoa is also gluten-free.

Cooking Quinoa may seem intimidating since there are so few Quinoa recipes out and about but in actual fact, it is pretty simple and easy. It is cooked the same way as you would cook rice. You only need to add two parts of water to one part of Quinoa and let it simmer. However, it is the cleaning part that one has to be careful.

Although there are a lot of commercial packaged Quinoa that has been de-saponised, there are still Quinoa that still has its saponin. The saponin is a bitter outer layer which also contains oxalic acid which may cause some allergic reactions for those allergic to oxalic acid. So, if you bought a package of Quinoa that has not been de-saponised it is best that you follow the following instructions to remove the saponin:

You will need to soak the Quinoa is a bowl of water for several hours. Then you need to rinse it and strain it using a fine mesh sieve. You will notice a soapy residue and that is the saponin. That’s not all, you will need to soak it again and then repeat the rinsing process several times until there is no more soapy residue.

After you have removed the saponin, you can now safely cook the Quinoa any way you like. To cook it plainly, you just simmer a cup of Quinoa in two cups of water for 20 minutes until it doubles in size. Then you let it stand covered for another five minutes. You can also add other flavors if you want and experiment with sauces, salt, or even milk if it is breakfast food you are wanting. After you’ve tasted the nice fragrant nutty taste of Quinoa, you will definitely love it.
