Ten Food Choices Regularly Made By 100+ Year Olds
Want to live to a ripe old age?
Britain’s oldest woman Florence Baldwin, who has recently celebrated her 113th birthday, credits her long life to a daily fried egg sandwich.
And while medicine can tell you exactly what shortens your life span (smoking and being overweight come to mind) researchers have for along time struggled to identify things that contribute to living longer.
Eating healthy can certainly help but just what types of foods should you choose? And can what you eat really impact how long you live?
So, a good start might be to look over the list below which includes ten different food choices revealed by centenarian’s when asked about the secret to their longevity.
1) Herring and orange juice – is the recommendation from 115-year-old Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper. The herring is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids known to be beneficial to your heart and cardiovascular system. A glass of orange juice provides vitamin C and antioxidants.
2) Vegetables – A variety of these healthy foods cut the risk of cancer and heart disease, and are a regular part of the menu for 120-year-old Mariam Amash. Green veggies are the staple of a good diet and offer a lot of key vitamins and minerals like iron, carotene and dietary fiber.
3) Custard cakes – might seem out of place on a list like this, but 114-year-old Mitoyo Kawate swears by this very sweet treat and who can argue with her? Experts do concede that as a part of a healthy, balanced diet, a few sweets now and then aren’t generally troublesome and can make a stricter diet in other places easier to maintain.
4) Alcohol – 113-year-old Lucy d’Abreu drink in moderation, and alcohol in moderation has been shown to bring down the risk of heart disease. However, alcohol consumption has also been connected to increased cancer risk and too much drinking is known to bring a variety of health complications.
5) Sausage in bread – was the treat of rural Ukranian Hryhoriy Nestor, though dietary wisdom balks at eating processed foods. Experts insist such foods should only be part of a balanced diet that includes lots of vegetables and plenty of regular exercise.
6) Bread, dripping, salt – Perhaps living to over 100 came in spite of this highly unhealthy diet choice. Still Yorkshire woman Ada Mason swears this food is the secret to having celebrated 111 birthdays.
7) Porridge – Scotswoman Annie Knight, 111 years old, starts her mornings by eating this traditional Scottish breakfast, giving her body a regular dose of fiber. Adding milk makes porridge full of other nutrients like calcium too.
Boiled rice and chicken – is a fantastic source of starch and low fat protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Yukichi Chuganji, At age 114, who doesn’t like vegetables, continues to enjoy this comination regularly.
9) Cottage cheese – a good source of calcium, and other essential nutrients, important to your bones, teeth and body health, this food is the favorite of the world’s oldest woman, Sakhan Dosova, who has just reached an astonishing 130 years old.
10) Donkey milk – while you won’t find this in the dairy cases at your local grocery store, 116-year-old Maria Esther de Capovilla, swore the milk she regularly drank as a youngster is the reason she’s lived so long.
Before you stock up on some of the more unconventional “goodies”, it’s critical to note that what these people eat may only be part of the reason they live so long.
Good genes certainly play a role, as does the things these people did early in life.
Perhaps what happened while their mothers were carrying them, or a lack of stress in early life could be part of the picture.
And one final “food for thought”, Dr. de Grey, whose Methuselah Foundation is funding research into regenerative medicine for aging, says those in the over 100 club have in common, “If there’s one thing we can say about centenarians, it’s that nothing bothers them.

Hollywood’s Anti-Aging Secret
Resveratrol is a constituent of red wine. It came to public attention following a report that French men who drank red wine did not have some of the age related diseases that their American counterparts in the same age group suffered frequently. Resveratrol is also found in small amounts in berries, peanuts and grape skins. The above report has ignited an interest on how we can live longer with Resveratrol
Since Resveratrol has the properties of an anti-oxidant, it has gained its share of popularity on issues related to weight loss and has been out in the market as a form of dietary supplement to aid out in getting rid of fats. Antioxidants are certain elements that have the capacity to lessen the amount of free radicals, which are waste products of the many cellular functions in our bodies. Recently though, the effects of Resveratrol on the aging process have captured the interest of many.
Resveratrol resembles the effects of caloric restriction diet in more than one way. Its effect on aging is basically parallel to that of being on a restricted calorie diet, which has been proven to slow down the aging process and help avoid a number, if not all, of age-related illnesses.
It is believed that resveratrol works to block the absorption of certain fats inside the body and helps to flush them through the digestive tract out of the body. In addition, it bonds with certain bad cholesterol and triglycerides to keep them from building up in the body.
Other studies are showing that resveratrol deactivates the gene most responsible for aging. Resveratrol may well become known as the proverbial fountain of youth. It has definitely been shown that this compound works to inhibit, or even prevent, certain types of cancers, most notably breast cancer in women.
It has been found that we cannot fully rely on red wine, berries, grapes and other fruits as the source of ample resveratrol for the body. High dosage of this element has to be taken in order for the effects to be possible. This can be found in the form of dietary supplements.
Several tests have been conducted about resveratrol absorption in the body. When taken as a pill or capsule, it should be about 250mg for the resveratrol compound to be measured and the presence to be recognized in the bloodstream about 30 minutes after taking it in. After 4 hours, all traces of it are completely erased from the bloodstream. From this, it can be concluded that the compound should be supplied on a regular schedule in order to have sufficient amount of it in the body to effectively slow down the aging process.
Resveratrol could save your life. Read about the amazing health benefits of resveratrol at the How to Slow Aging Blog to see why medical researchers are excited about it.

Can Omega Daily Get Rid Of Rheumatoid Arthritis Suffering?
Rheumatoid arthritis is certainly the most dangerous and severe form of arthritis. It is known to attack both joints and some internal organs including eyes, lungs and heart. The signs of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) include painful joint and eyes inflammations.
This form of arthritis is very fast-acting. It causes 75 per cent of damage during the first five years (over 50% damage happens during the first two years) – so we have to have it diagnosed as soon as possible. Otherwise most of the damage will be done before we can react. It is especially important as there is no way o undo the damage done by RA – so far it is incurable.
There are several drugs that can be used to reduce the effects of rheumatoid arthritis. First, there are NSAID – Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as acetylsalicylic acid and ibuprofen. Most of them are available over the counter, but in more severe cases you may want to ask your doctor for stronger NSAID that are prescription-only. Other means of reducing the symptoms of RA is increasing the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids by taking Omega Daily food supplement or simply by eating more fish oil. These nutrients are known to decrease periods of morning stiffness as well as for reducing inflammations.
Rheumatoid Arthritis can be also fought by other medications. The most effective, but also the most effective are Biological Response Modifiers. While they can virtually stop the progress of RA, their cost prohibits their wider use. A year-long treatment can cost more than twenty-five thousand dollars.
DMARD are another family of drugs used to treat RA. Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs have, unlike NSAIDs, little effect on the inflammations themselves. Their role however, is much more important: they minimize the damage done by the disease.
There is also one thing you definitely should start doing as soon as you learn about your RA. This thing is… swimming! The reason for that is simple: you have to strengthen your muscles to limit the stress put to the joints during everyday movements, but you must not overexert your joints as it will only bring more damage to the joints. Swimming is certainly the best low-impact sport to do – it affects all muscles while minimizing the chance of damaging the joints.
Only in the United States there are more than two million people affected by this disease. While it affect women more often than men and the susceptibility to RA is thought to be hereditary, don’t discard it even if you’re a male with no RA history in your family. It can happen to anyone, anytime – if you suspect you have RA, contact your doctor ASAP. Every week matters, so don’t delay your visit!

Food and Your Health
Food is burned in the body by the help of the air that we breathe. All food can be used as body-fuel and food is measured as fuel-units called calories. There are numerous amounts of people that eat too much and thereby consume too many calories. There are some however that eat too little and consume too little calories. Frequently, the person will make the mistake unconsciously by measuring the food by weight or bulk instead of by calories. There are some foods that are much more concentrated than others, meaning that they have a lot of calories by bulk; others are bulky, meaning they contain less calories in a given bulk. Although olive oil is a good healthy fat, one third of an ounce of olive oil contains 100 calories, which is as much as what is in a pound or more of celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, string beans, watermelon, or lettuce.
Before going even further, it may help to explain more about the picture of food values. It is easier to make a note of some of the common foods at the table that contain about 100 calories. A small lamb chop weighing about an ounce; one large egg weighing about 2 ounces; about 3 ounces of baked beans; about an ounce of cheese; 3.5 ounces of sweet corn and about an ounce of shredded wheat biscuit, all contain about 100 calories. Even a small piece of sponge-cake of about one ounce, will contain about 100 calories. The larger the person or the more muscular the work that the person does, then the more food and calorie that he needs.
Research data especially with life insurance, has shown substantially that weight, especially in relation to age, is a big influence on longevity.
Unless it is in the earlier stages of life, being overweight is an unfavorable condition that can influence longevity, more so than being underweight. Life insurance tables however, cannot determine whether an individual is actually overweight or underweight as some body types may be either underweight or overweight, depending on their general structure and body framework. The mortality research on elderly and middle-aged overweight has been unfavorable. The lowest mortality rate is normally found among those who average as a group, a few pounds over the average weight before they reach the age of 35 and a few pounds under the average weight, after the age of 35. To summarize it up, being overweight after the age of 35 is associated with an increasingly higher death rate. Therefore without proper nutrition and physical activity and if there are too many faulty living habits, being middle-aged can be a menace to our health unless we are pro-active.
If there is a tendency in the family to gain weight, then we should keep a watchful eye on our eating habits, beginning early in life. If there is already a considerable amount of weight already present, then you must be very careful on how you lose weight. Unless you have an actual disease, weight loss can usually be done without any drugs as long as the person is determined and faithful to their regime.
Being continuously vigilant is of the uttermost importance, when trying to maintain a good healthy balance of foods. Although this can be quite difficult, it is usually much more rewarding in comparison to the inconvenience of being overweight.
If you are more than 35 and are even 15-20 pounds over the average weight, then you should probably consider trying to lose weight in a safe way. Good eating habits should be formed to keep the weight down automatically, instead of relying on sporadic attempts that are more likely to fail. No matter how well you may feel, you should really try to stay out of that life insurance category table list, that may bring you undesirable risks.
One of the reasons why a lot of people eat a lot of foods such as popcorn, candies, chips, … is because they feel that because they are between meals, they do not count. Often there is also the oversight of not realizing that we are using many accessories throughout the day like butter and cream, that actually often contain even more calories than the meal itself. Of course icecream and other desserts have even more food value than is often realized. Our body and nature itself counts every calorie very carefully and if the number of calories that we consume is more than the number that our body needs, then this excess becomes tissue or fat. Therefore, these calories are then retained and will accumulate in the body.
Someone who is not heavy enough, can usually gain more weight just by following general good food eating habits. There has to be caution however about forcing themself to eat beyond their capacity to digest the food. Physical exhaustion and overfatigue should also then be avoided.
As we get older, our consumption of meat should be reduced and the foods that are more bulky in character such as fruits and vegetables, should be increased.
Normally the amount of food that we eat in hot weather should be less, as fewer calories are needed at this time to sustain the heat of the body. Meats have a tendency of producing immediate heat.
Each individual should decide what is an appropriate amount of food to eat. The appropriate amount would be the amount that would be the weight sustainable and will maintain a good healthy weight. If the weight and the fantastic feeling of wellness is maintained, then one should be able to assume that a sufficient amount of food is taken.
