How To Wine Taste In A Restaurant?

Wine has always been a satisfying and enjoyable complement to a lovely meal at a restaurant. Wine tasting in a restaurant is a very rich and rewarding experience. Once you have made your wine selection, there are a number of steps involved in properly tasting the wine that will make the wine tasting experience even more pleasurable.

1. Smell the Cork: Detecting the aroma from the cork will tell how well the wine has been taken care of. Once the cork has been removed from the bottle, examine it to make sure it is not dry, cracked, or has mold growing from it. If the cork is dry on both ends, this means that oxygenation took place which affects the taste. If everything looks good, (one end containing wine and the other end dry) smell the end of the cork that contains wine. It should not have any unusual aroma such as a musty or sharp smell.

2. Smell the Wine: Pour a small amount of wine in a glass. (No more than few ounces in a glass) Hold your glass and gently swirl it around. This will cause the wine’s aroma to be released. Raise the glass to your nose and breathe in. Take a few seconds to get a sense of the aroma. Detecting distinct flavors tells you that the wine is good. If you detect any musty odors or a vinegar type odor, the wine has likely gone bad. When you smell the wine, make a note of any distinct aromas. For instance, white wines can have such aromas as flowers, grapefruit, peaches, apples, and other citrus. Red wines can smell like prunes, raspberries, cherries, etc.

3. Tasting the Wine: Take a small sip of the wine. Breathe in as you sip the wine so that you get the full aroma. Do not swallow the wine right away. Move it around a bit in your mouth to get all of the flavors. Note how long the taste stays in your mouth after swallowing. As well, note how it feels and tastes in your mouth. Is it acidic, fruity, or have a strong alcohol taste? Or, do the flavors blend well together and leave a nice flavor in the mouth that is not too weak or strong? Note if your mouth feels like it is drying out or if it feel refreshed. As well, is the texture of the wine smooth and silky or is it harsh and fizzy.

When ordering wine with your meal, always select wine based on you and your guests’ personal tastes. When choosing a wine with a particular meal, most people follow the general rule: “white wine with lighter foods and red wine with heavier foods.” It is important to select a wine that you will enjoy, regardless of what you are eating. If you are unsure of what to select, your server will be able to offer some helpful tips. Learning to smell and taste wine, including the characteristics of a fine wine, will go long way to ensuring you made the right wine selection. Wine is a wonderful and satisfying complement to a meal at any restaurants. Knowing how to properly taste the wine will make the dining experience even more satisfying.

Fine Dining Etiquette

Having an exquisite dinner at a fine dining restaurant is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy a first-rate meal. When partaking in the fine dining experience, there are a number of etiquette practices that must be followed in order to make the dining experience even more special.

1. Dress for the Occasion: When you dine at a fine dining restaurant, you have to remember that your everyday clothing is not acceptable. Fine dining restaurants normally have a strict dress code. It is very formal so suits with a tie and attractive dresses, skirts, or stylish pants are appropriate. If you are not sure about the particular restaurant’s dress code, call the establishment.

2. Table Arrangement: When you dine at a fine dining establishment, the table set up is different than a regular family restaurant. For instance, you eat your meal by selecting silverware from the outside to inside, toward the plate. You will have more than one fork. The bigger fork is the dinner fork or entree fork. You will also have a smaller salad fork. Over the dinner plate, there will be a dessert spoon and dessert fork. Knives and spoons are placed at the right side of the plate. Forks are placed to the left of the plate. Glasses are placed to the right of the dinner plate. Napkins are to be placed on the lap.

3. Table Etiquette: It is important to greet your host by shaking hands. Do not put your elbows on the table. Sit up straight. Always use utensils when eating, and not your hands. Do not start eating until everyone at the table has been served. Always pass items to the right. Eat at the same rate as your guests. Do not pick up food with your hands. Do not chew food with your mouth open or talk with a mouth full of food. Chew small morsels. Don’t talk with your mouth full. Don’t speak so loudly that you annoy other patrons. Compliment the host on the flavor and appearance of the meal. Do not put too much food in your mouth as you will end up chewing with your mouth open. Do not dip food in other liquids such as soup or broths. When finished, keep the plate on your setting and wait for the server to take it away. Do not talk on a cell phone while dining.

4. Restaurant Host/Hostess: Treat restaurant staff with respect. Leave a tip of at least 15%. Do not treat a restaurant host harshly. Be courteous and enjoy how well you are treated. If there is a mistake with the meal, do not get angry and cause a scene. Explain the problem and the host will take care of it.

The practice of using proper restaurant etiquette is essential when having dinner at a fine dining restaurant. It can seem like we should know all of the etiquette rules, but there are differences with fine dining that should be remembered.

Graze on Sushi

Sushi anyone? Who would have thought it, sushi and chic in the same sentence? And it looks like it is here to stay.

It seems that everywhere I look, there’s a sushi bar, restaurant, sushi at wedding’s, and it seems to be here to stay. Many more Americans are getting on the sushi craze and college campuses as well. Cafeterias on many major universities are now serving this trendy treat.

Whether using your fingers or eating sushi with chopsticks, you will find that there are many different tastes and textures. The ancient Japanese looked for a way to preserve fish for an extended period and they developed the art of sushi. Today the small bite wonders of sushi are considered a delicacy.

Beginning not long after World War II in the early 50’s, sushi started making its way into restaurants in the U.S. My first recollection of sushi was California rolls. They began to make their way into restaurants during the 70’s and have been on the rise for decades.

Not only has sushi been on the rise in the U. S., in Japan the American style sushi is on the rise as well. From the late 80’s up to the beginning of the 21st century, sushi establishments have quadrupled or more. That should tell you that the taste of sushi to the palate Americans is continuing to rise.

Several processes are used to prepare the sushi, such as soaking the fish in rice wine, pickling the fish or for tofu, cooked shellfish. But not all sushi contains raw fish. Actually the word sushi means vinegared rice, which is the main ingredient in sushi.

In order to help the digestion of the sushi, it is commonly served with a pickled ginger sauce, which also aids in cleansing the palate between bites. Wasabi, a greenish paste is also served with the sushi and is made from a Japanese horseradish.

In one serving of sushi, which is about 6 to 7 pieces, we can receive omega 3, fatty acids and a lean source of protein, all necessary for a healthy diet. This would be considered a low fat diet. A serving of sushi is typically less than 500 calories.

So when you are ready to make the move to sushi, take these things into consideration. Sushi rolls are a good way to start for those first time sushi eaters. It’s best to always get your recommendations from the chef about what is good on the menu that day. Fish is seasonal and the chef will know what to suggest.

I Want To Open My Own Italian Restaurant

I have thought about opening my own Italian restaurant because I love to cook and I love to cook Italian food. One of my favorite items to cook is lasagna. I actually cook lasagna for thanksgiving dinner instead of turkey. But whether you are cooking lasagna, manicotti, ravioli, or even pizza, the key is in the pasta sauce. Here is my recipe for great pasta sauce which is the basis for most Italian meals.

I used to use a large soup pan to prepare the sauce but now I use a slow cooker. It is easier because I do not have to stir the sauce as much as I do cooking it over a stove. I do sometimes open the lid on the slow cooker to stir maybe two or three times but other than that the sauce is on its own. You need a food processor for this pasta sauce recipe. And of course you need the slow cooker.

This is a vegetable pasta sauce. I do add chicken or beef sometimes but usually I stick with just vegetables. Grate four medium sized carrots and three baby zucchini squash; then process three cloves of garlic with one large onion; then process one half a stalk of celery along with a bunch of parsley. All of these ingredients go in your slow cooker.

Now cover the ingredients with two 28 ounce cans of diced tomatoes and one eight ounce can of tomato paste. Stir all the ingredients together. Now add the spices. You add one teaspoon each of rosemary, thyme, oregano, marjoram, basil, savory, and sage. Give that a good stir. Now you add about two tablespoons of sugar. The sugar cuts down the acidity of the tomato.

Cook in the slow cooker for about two hours at the low setting. You can stir the sauce a few times throughout if you want but you do not have to keep stirring as you would if you cooked in a kettle on the stove top.

Some pasta sauce purest would never use a slow cooker for pasta sauce but I have tried both and I do not taste a difference in the sauce and it is easier for me to use a slow cooker because I can go off and not worry about the sauce boiling and splashing my stove top.

Use the stove top if you like. First bring the sauce to a boil and then return the flame to a simmer. And keep stirring the sauce. And once the pasta sauce is done cook up some pasta and try your sauce.

Remember to refrigerate your sauce when it cools. I transfer it to a cool pan to let it cool down faster. Now you have a lot of pasta sauce for the week. You can now try some lasagna recipes or other Italian dishes and your meals will taste like ones from an Italian restaurant.

As Mississauga restaurants offer some of the finest cuisine, restaurants Montreal also have outstanding desserts. If you’re thinking of eating a one-of-a-kind meal, remember to visit those restaurants!

Tips On Making A Homemade Hydroponics System

Make Your Own Homemade Hydroponics System

It used to be that hydroponics were thought of as being something used by regular people far into the future, but that is not true anymore. Many of today’s home gardeners are using hydroponic systems in order to grow different plants and vegetables to supplement their grocery consumption on a regular basis. Hydroponic systems that are purchased ready made are usually very expensive. You can make your own Homemade Hydroponics System easy and inexpensively.

In a hydroponic system one grows plants with absolutely no soil at all. Plants are placed in what is called a medium that would not be considered soil and get nutrients from a liquid. Because there is no soil to deal with hydroponics is a clean system and you can grow plants year round. Creating your own system is very inexpensive and you will also save on the food bill because you are growing some of your own food even in the winter.

One easy method of hydroponics is referred to as the Wick Method. Here liquid with nutrients is sucked up by nylon rope into the pots of the plants that have been inserted into a planting medium. You do not need much to achieve this method and nothing costs much money.

You will need a plastic storage tub that is a dark color. The dark color is needed to because algae will not grow in something that is dark, it needs the sun. Another tub is also needed that fits into the other tub that will hold the pots. You can get the same color or any color you desire. Also needed is a few yards of one half inch rope in nylon. An aquarium air pump is necessary in order to keep the nutrient solution oxygenated. Pots that will fit into the tub and filled with planting medium is needed. Planting medium can be pebbles made of clay or use vermiculite and perlite in equal combination. When growing indoors you can not get enough sunlight from outside sources so you will need grow lights.

Each pot will need a length of the roping. Put one end of the rope through the hole in the bottom of each pot then place some of the medium in while holding the rope up. You want the rope to be in and amongst the roots of the plant and the other end will dangle a few inches to a foot below. Place the plants in the medium. In your tub that will hold the plants you will need to drill a half inch hole under where each of the plants will be situated. Pull the rope that dangles out of the pot through the hole so it dangles into the solution once you place the plant tub in the solution tub.

The only maintenance needed to keep this wick system going is to be sure the bottom tub has enough solution in it. Check at least once a week and better two times a week but this will depend on how much your plants drink. Grow your own lettuce and tomatoes and other vegetables so you will not have to go to the grocery and pay big bucks during the off season.

Tips For Cooking And Grilling Meat

Preparing meat for grilling is more advanced than what those new to grilling would think. Even grilling itself has a few rules in order to keep the end result safe to consume. If you are somewhat new to the idea of grilling meat, you will have to go through a crash course in safety measures before grilling.

Most of the safety concerns you will deal with involve preparing the meat for cooking. It is common to start preparing meat several days before it is actually grilled, since adding a marinade could take several days to correctly soak into the meat. In doing so, you should store the meat away from the door and keep your refrigerator at a cool 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Use a clean cutting board when slicing your meat to perfection. If you have different types of meat, such as beef and chicken, you should either use separate cutting boards or wash the one you have with warm soap and water before cutting up the next type of meat. Be very sure to keep other items such as vegetables away from the board.

The way you eat now will have a large effect on your body years from now. It is best to eat lean and get plenty of exercise, as doctors will undoubtedly tell you. Red meat has a bad reputation for being loaded with fatty content, but you can cut down on this fact by slicing out any visible fat regions. This prevents fat from grilling into the meat or being consumed directly.

While on the fire, try not to have the steaks sit directly over a high flame. This could char the meat and create blackened portions that are not healthy to eat. If you do notice an abnormally black section of your meat that looks like it has been charred, cut this portion out before serving. Char is associated with several health defects, and can be a carcinogen in some case.

Above all else, make sure you have cooked the meat well enough that you won’t have to worry about eating raw meat. The surest method of becoming ill is to eat meat that has not been cooked all the way through. Use a knife to gently cut into the meat and note its color. Also use your thumb to measure the texture of the meat. It’s better to slightly overcook than undercook your family’s meal.

Closing Comments

Grilling is an All-American pastime that is observed in warm months of the year. Just remember that while you are celebrating a good meal, you have supplied your friends and family with a safe and tasty barbeque as a result of following these tips.
